I wish our group's meeting room:

Ubuntu Georgia Local Community
Thursday, 15 November 2007 22:38

Don't know if you'd count this as a user group or not. I guess so, but not in the traditional monthly-meeting sense. It's a website that tries to coordinate the Ubuntu community in Georgia. They recently co-sponsored an installfest with ALE. They have a mailing list, IRC channel, etc.

From their page at: http://ubuntu-georgia.org

Goals

  • Create one main place where users will be able to gather and share information about the distribution.
  • Plan organized activities to socialize with the group and promote Ubuntu. These events will probably be coordinated closely with LUGs in Georgia; while LUGs include non-Ubuntu users, many promote Ubuntu heavily, and are interested in working with the LoCo group on events. Events which both groups participate in will be general linux-friendly events, with a focus on the use of Ubuntu.

  • Tailgate Swap Meet and FreeIT Athens Build Party Road Trip

Tailgate Swap Meet and FreeIT Donation Drive:
Thursday, July 16th, 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm

FreeIT Athens Build Party Road Trip:
    Saturday, July 18th, 10:30am to 7:30pm

Sponsored by Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts and Ubuntu Georgia LoCo.

TAILGATE SWAP MEET and FreeIT Donation Drive:

This event will be held in the Emory Law School ground level parking lot (immediately East of the Law School building) preceding the regularly scheduled ALE Central monthly meeting for Thursday, July 16th. The Swap Meet will run from 6:00 pm to ~7:15 pm with the ALE monthly meeting following at 7:30pm.

    • In addition to buying, selling and swapping of geek gear, volunteers for FreeIT will be on hand to accept donations of computers, components and related items for that organization's work delivering low cost computers and FOSS to educational institutions, non profit groups and less privileged communities. Please see the FreeIT donations "wish list" at: http://www.freeitathens.org/donate for details on needed equipment and support.
    • Note that USB/PS2 Keyboards & Mice are especially helpful at present, but anything on the wish list will be welcomed. Donated equipment will be stored by Atlanta volunteers until they are delivered to FreeIT on Saturday, July 18th, with the FreeIT Athens Build Pary Road Trip.

FreeIT Athens BUILD PARTY ROAD TRIP:

This volunteer event will be taking place on Saturday, July 18th, 2009 from 10:30am to ~7:30pm. The plan is to travel as a group to the FreeIT facilities in Athens, Georgia and spend the afternoon building, repairing, assembling and installing Linux computer systems that will be donated to regional educational institutions, non profit groups and community members in need.

    • To facilitate delivery of donated equipment and car pooling, the Road Trip caravan to FreeIT Athens will congregate at the Fry's parking lot (S.W. corner) near I-85 and Pleasant Hill road, adjacent to the Gwinnett Place Mall. Volunteers should arrive between 10:00am and 10:30am as we hope to depart by 10:45am and arrive at FreeIT in Athens by about Noon. Plans are to work at FreeIT until about 6:00pm, then drive out to arrive back at Frys by 7:30pm.
    • NOTE: Additional equipment donations will be accepted in the Frys parking lot (S.W. corner) from 10:00am until departure time. See the FreeIT donations "wish list" at: http://www.freeitathens.org/donate.
    • Volunteers can bring their own lunch or participate in a group lunch order; collections will be taken and food ordered upon arrival at FreeIT Athens. Donations of frosty beverages for the afternoon will also be most welcome. Dinner and post-road-trip frivolities at an establishment in the vicinity of Gwinnett Mall may ensue as participating volunteers are motivated.
    • All volunteers and participants are, of course, welcome to make their own travel arrangements to FreeIT Athens as they see fit, though we request that you still RSVP to help us better coordinate the event effort.
