Research on Open Source Companies in Atlanta
Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:41

This from today's mail:

My name is Dhanaraj and I am a grad student at Georgia Tech interested in doing some research on open source software businesses in the Atlanta/Georgia area. Specifically I want to talk to businesses/consultants that are involved in OSS development for commercial purposes - their main product/service is OSS based.

the objectives here are to (1) get an idea of the size and make-up of OSS firms, (2) find out what are some of the challenges facing OSS businesses in Atlanta (and perhaps Georgia) and (3) how state level conditions (such as laws, labor, etc.) help/hinder them.

so I am writing you to see if you know of sources (people/organizations) that could help me identify OSS businesses/consultants in Atlanta (and/or Georgia)? I see you have a list on your website - I was wondering where else I could check.

Open Source Job Growth
Thursday, 04 February 2010 13:22

A recent article in Network World listed 'open source specialist' as one of the 10 Best Jobs right now in IT. Sharpen those skill, folks.

From the article: "We are seeing a ton of demand for skills around open source technologies and frameworks. Demand for Python, Ruby on Rails and PHP development skills far exceeds the number of people available with skills," said Michael Kirven, co-founder and principal of IT resource firm Bluewolf.

AUUG talk on Unix in Home Entertainment

Some people have asked for a copy of the talk I gave at the AUUG meeting in December. It's in Apple Keynote format, and 85Mb, since it has embedded video.

CRMAtlanta Meetup
Sunday, 10 January 2010 15:49
There's a new meetup in the area for the new year, CRMAtlanta. Although it strictly isn't an open source meetup, it's being spearheaded by Josh Sweeney, the local SugarCRM guru, who's just launched a new site: crmstage.com, where you can find tutorials and modules for SugarCRM.

FreeSide Atlanta Update
Tuesday, 06 October 2009 20:40
It's been about six months or so since I've been in touch with the Freeside Atlanta folks. A lot's been happening! Freeside Atlanta now has a home, a website, wiki and people actually paying money. For those who are uninformed, a freeside is an open-source kind of hardware workshop where members can build, hack, teach, learn and have fun. Wish I lived closer (but not too close, given the neighborhood). Anyway, please check out the Freeside Atlanta Website for all the latest. Some upcoming events include a MythTV installfest on Saturday October 10th, so come out and build your own DVR.
