Joomla Group Changes Names

The Joomla Southeast group is changing, here's the scoop:

Our Name is Changing to Joomla User Group Atlanta

Some of you will be thinking, "those guys should have done it a long time ago. Joomla South East is much too broad ....". You're probably right.

Joomla is working towards giving official status to user groups like ours. As part of the registration they asked us to define our area as accurately as possible, so we'll now be Joomla User Group Atlanta.

Look forward to seeing you in Alpharetta on Wednesday evenings!

Regards

Steve Burge

Struggling Meetups?

In poking around meetup.com, I found the following open source meetups around the Atlanta area:

The Atlanta MySQLbPHP Meetup Group, which looks to be a beginner's MySQL/PHP group,

The Lawrenceville PHP Meetup Group, with a handful of members, and

The Atlanta MySQL Meetup Group, which has 44 members, but no meetings scheduled. Should they combine with the new PostgreSQL group and form an Atlanta Open Source Database Group?

and a fledgling Atlanta Apache Meetup Group , which hasn't gotten off the ground yet.  I wish I'd known about them earlier, the Atlanta Unix Users' Group had a good Apache session last year, we could've helped them get going.

Ingres: Back from the Dead and Open Source?

I got an interesting email from Bill Wittel up in Gainesville. He's the new Partner Account Manager for Ingres. Ingres?!? anybody remember Ingres? They were one of the first open-source RDBMS systems. Yes, open-source as in GPL. It was developed at U Cal Berkeley, I believe. They then went commercial. The academic side started a new database: PostgreSQL. Anyway, Ingres had a good run. A friend of mine earned a good living in the 90s being an Ingres consultant. Then Ingres got bought by Ask, Inc. Then they got bought by CA. Somehow they're re-emerged from the Bataan Death March that most CA products go on. Anyway, they're apparently back and billing themselves as the only enterprise-class open source database. I'm sure Sun would debate that after paying $1B for MySQL, but nonetheless. There isn't a local Ingres Users' group yet, but if you're interested, contact me or Bill Wittel or RIchard Granath (Ingres Sales Rep) in the area. You can email them at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it There's a national Ingres users' group. Maybe they can leverage off of that. We'll be keeping an eye on ths one.

See the wikipedia article on Ingress, it looks pretty much like I remember things.

Time for a WordPress Group?

We have groups for Joomla and Drupal, but probably the most popular of dynamic-content engines is the ubiquitous WordPress . I know that there's an Atlanta Bloggers Network , but that's not quite the same. A lot of people are using WordPress as an entry-level CMS. Several of the users' groups here use it that way, and there's even a commercial outfit or two in town pushing WordPress as CMS. What do you think? Is it time for an Atlanta Wordpress Users' Group?

User Group Programs

Part of the idea for this site is to encourage cross-pollination between the user groups. I know it's tough coming up with new speakers for every meeting. Guess what? You don't have to. Speakers and topics from other groups can be appropriate for yours. For example, I gave a presentation at the Atlanta Unix Users' Group about the current state of the art in open-source databases a few months back. I was invited to come to the Georgia Oracle Users' Group last month to give the same presentation. I was well-received at both meetings. So heads up, program coordinators. Look around at the other users groups and see if any of their topics would work for you. We'd still love for a Ruby programmer to come to the Unix Users' Group and give a talk on 'Ruby for Unix SysAdmins'. So start looking around and sharing programs and speakers.
